What frequently gets overlooked in the "battle against crime" is that increases in crime statistics are almost universally preceded by a widespread moral decay in society.

The epidemic of juvenile crime very definitely has been preceded by rampant deterioration of moral values among youth in a study published in 1992, for instance, the Joseph & Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics found 61% of all high school students admitted to having cheated on an exam once or more during the last year. As well, 33% confessed to having stolen from parents or relatives at least once in the same period. And the actual figures might even be higher than this, as many of the youngsters surveyed also admitted that they lied in the poll.

A Lockeland student wanted to do something about the violence and other problems in his school so he asked his class to join the "Set A Good Example Contest." The principal later stated that this turned the school around, reducing violence by 70-80%.
Students from Amundsen High School in Chicago, Illinois adopted the precept "Love and Help Children" and held a walk-a-thon to raise money to help newborns addicted to cocaine. |
